Families

We had some fun during Math time, tying it into our Social Studies family unit.   We made a chart today focusing on one part of families: the children!  We completed the following survey-

We used our chart to answer some questions.  It was cool to see how the answers were right there in front of us, and having the information in a chart made things easier for us.

I'd like to send out a big THANK YOU to families for being so generous in their contributions to our school Thanksgiving baskets.  The children had a great time decorating and packing the boxes, and felt good to help others who might not be as fortunate as us in some ways.

We have talked a lot about our families and things we do together, and it is something we will continue to focus on throughout the holiday season.  Today after our morning message we talked about Thanksgiving and how it is a holiday where we remember all of the people and things we are thankful for.  Below I have written what your child said he or she was thankful for (keep in mind there was no prep time, so it is off the tops of their heads!)  Rest assured, they all have expressed how grateful they are for their families MANY times before today.  Some are sweet, some are funny, and they all made us smile!

One of the coolest things about this was when one of the students raised her hand and reminded us that we can be thankful for things all year long, not just at Thanksgiving!  I was so excited to hear that, and we decided as a class that we should share things we are all thankful for every now and then throughout the year.  How sweet are your children?!

Conferences, oh my!

Excuse the lack of blogging this week!  With conferences tonight and tomorrow, I have been preparing for our conversations and have neglected the good old blog.  Rest assured that we are having a wonderful time as always... we have begun Guided Reading groups, new math activities, a pattern book writing unit, a family unit and more!  Phew!  Pictures and anecdotes to come, but in the meantime I look forward to seeing you all over the next two days!

Halloween in Review

What fun we had on Halloween!  It sounded this morning like everyone had a great evening of trick-or-treating last night... I know they also had a jam-packed school day yesterday, which I wanted to share a bit of with you.

We began by listening to first grade authors from Mrs. Young's class read to us.  After that we headed over to the computer lab as a class for the first time.  Mr. Barter taught us how to make virtual jack-o-lanterns, which was really exciting!  Then we of course had our Kindergarten school parade, which made us feel VERY special... the big kids loved our masks.

Happy Halloween!

After lunch and recess, we had P.E. before enjoying spooky snacks- ghosts, pumpkins, cats and bats.  Then we headed into town to watch Grades 1-4 and the school band in their parade.  We had a great time watching them in action on the beautiful afternoon...

All in all, I'd say Halloween 2011 was a success.  We changed our calendar to November today, which I can't believe has already arrived.


Notice about Upcoming Conferences

Next Wednesday evening and Thursday (daytime) we will have parent-teacher conferences.  Students do not come to school Thursday, Nov. 10 due to conferences, nor do they come Friday, Nov. 11 as it is Veterans' Day.   I will be sending out a notice with sign-up times at the end of this week to schedule a time to meet with each of you to discuss your child's progress and share with you their portfolio.   The meetings will last twenty minutes each.  For your information, report cards will not be given out until December; these conferences are simply a time for us to touch base and talk about your child, which I am so looking forward to.
